Swimming is funny like that

I had a tough sleep last night...waking up shortly after 2am and staying awake until about 5am. Not sure what was keeping me up...mind wasn't really racing and only had one coffee throughout the previous day. I figure it might have insanely warm our room felt and/or nearly OD'ing on Mike-and Ike candy after supper.

Anyways...when 5:30am rolled around I was in no shape to get up bike 45 minutes to the pool and swim 3000m. Slept in until 7:15am before getting up and trying to haul ass down to campus.

Swam a modified workout during lunch:

400m w/u
300m drill
9x 100m on 10 seconds rest at a medium intensity
5x 150m sprints on 1 minutes rest
100m cool down.

I feel like I am currently in a swimming funk. It is like I am fighting the water instead of working with it and as a result my times are way the eff out the window over yonder in Saskatchewan somewhere. This is not a new experience for me as I tend to go through this several times throughout the training/racing season. I hit a Peak and then I hit a Valley...rinse and repeat.

Of the three sports, swimming is the only one I can really see this happening. It is not like having a bad workout, but a string of bad workouts. Well...not really bad workouts per se, but ones in which you feel completely off your stroke. Funny huh?

As for the rest of the day, I have a 50 minute ride home in the T-storms followed by a 90 minute spin on the tri bike this evening. I have a 30 minute tempo effort scheduled in there.

I don't really plan on tapering for the race this weekend but will have to take Friday off as I am at a company retreat/planning session. After that, I have somewhat a late night to prepare our department for the power outage over the weekend. I am hoping that does not run too late into the night.

I find that with swimming too -- it is such an odd sport! Or maybe we are just odd swimmers? LOL!!!

i'm glad i'm not the only one that can OD on candy, heh. and yes, that's likely why you were awake mr. sugar.

workouts, they are funny. one minute you feel like a rockstar, next minute you feel like the chauffer of a rockstar. ah well...

I've had much the same thing happen with my swimming too. No idea why. My personal suspicion is that the water is so unforgiving is that when the least little thing is wrong, it shows up in the results big time. And it's so easy to have things not quite right.
