- Some roads are barely wide enough for vehicles, let alone bikes and vehicles
- I can't ride nearly fast enough to keep up with traffic on the "tank".
- I don't trust any of the drivers...too many people are half asleep, on their cellphones, smoking/drinking coffee & driving a stick at the same time.
First up was a bus driver about 15 minutes after leaving the house. I had to turn left at a 3-way intersection....waited my turn, signaled and went. The bus driver was merging into my lane and had a yield to traffic sign but decided he wasn't waiting for a cyclist. So I manage to squeak by him about about 2 feet. He was so on my ass that I felt violated. Instead of giving me room on the side of the road he runs me into the sidewalk!
I was fuming...and I almost caught him at a stop light, to give him a piece of my mind, before it turned green and he sped off. He had a bus load of kids so I was going to keep it G-rated nonetheless.
15 minutes later I am riding along the bike path coming up to an intersection. I get there as the walk signal appears and so I slow down to cross. Two cars turning left across the intersection and are not stopping for me so I stop to let them go. After that I am going. As I do, a mini-van comes flying through the intersection and lays on the horn for an eternity. I look up at the signal, look back at the driver, and point at the walk signal. I get the finger in return. Yes, you have a wonderful day as well I say to myself.
A short time later, I am coming up to a pedestrian on a sidewalk. They see me and decide they are not moving over so I have get off my bike and walk it around them.
Fuuuck me this morning.
I am saying to myself...I can't ride on the roads, I can't ride on the sidewalks, there are not enough pathways in this dam city. Everyone hates cyclists.
Do any of these people realize I am one less car on the road, one less car they have to wait behind at the lights, one less car polluting the environment...heck, one less car they have to wait behind in the Tim Horton's drive-through!!!
LMAO.
So I get into work, get a coffee and some breaky...blood sugar level rises, happiness ensues, and I have since forgiven the people from this morning.
Its lunchtime, I am due for a swim.
Happy Friday folks!

That is biking in car crazy Calgary for you. If you don't think the drivers are out to get you every second of your ride, you're going to end up being a messy decoration on some idiot's bumper.
I've only seen two cyclists that I think have the right idea. One has enough lights blinking and flashing that he looks like the spaceship from Close Encounters. He probably has a special holder for the batteries instead of a second water bottle. The other guy has so much reflective stuff on, plus a few lights, that you can tell your fenders need washing as you pass him. Assuming both of these are hims, which might not be a good assumption.
Others I think are batshit crazy, doing any one or a combination of the below. Riding without a helmet. No reflective stuff. No lights. Wearing colours that blend into the morning or evening gloom. Not paying ay attention to traffic or traffic control devices. (I sometimes do stuff contrary to what the traffic control device says, but I'm well aware it's there, and what the traffic is doing.) Riding in a drive lane when the tire space is the only clear pavement, and the ice starts sloping up and over the curb right from the tire lane.
Unfortunately Calgary is behind the times on this, as it is on any issue that doesn't involve oil, money etc.
They need bike lanes, the pathways are out for commuters, with a 20km/hr speed limit it pretty much limits use. Riding on the roads is taking your life in your hands, it is really unacceptable for a city that size...
Wow. Disappointing!
But we JUST got some bike lanes this summer!! I have yet to ride in them but they look wide and well marked and cool. There were over 300 cyclists that showed up at the "thanks City of Saskatoon" ride through town!!!
Unreal that Calgary doesn't have bike lanes. Blows my mind that drivers are that ignorant and dangerous.
Keith's description of the two riders lit up like Christmas trees is probably the best way to deal with it, but oh man, then you'd be known as "That Guy." LOL!!
It's more stressful then commuting by vehicle for heaven's sake!!
Amazing how stupid people are and I don't mean u. The drivers win everytime but that doesn't mean they should. And blood sugar levels -- really critical on a day like this!!
